Excavation around Ancient Conservatory in Greece

Aug. 08, 1957 - Ancient Altar discovered during Excavations around the Conservatory of Herod's of Attica. An ancient open altar belonging to a goddess of olden Greece was among the most recent discoveries during excavations around the Ancient Conservatory of Herodes of Attica. According to Mr. Miliadis who conducted the excavations the altar was dedicated to the Nymph Orithia daughter of the Athanian King Erechtheus. Oritin was carried off by the God of Winds Voreas and brought to his cave in the cold thrace. The altar of Oriphia is supposed to have been destroyed during the Hellenistic period before 323 146 BC. the cave discovered on the western side of the altar must have been connected with the cult of the nymph of the altar who originally was an underground goddess. Among the pieces of Vases said to belong to the 7th. 6th, 5th and 4th century BC> The vases were said to be offeerings of the Athenians to their Nymph orithia and bear characteristics representing chariot races and meetings of the Gods until the end of the 6th century.
