1962 - Will Tom Be The Winning Worm... Latest from the Worm Derby news-front is that, following the unfortunate death of Brighton favourite Whippy Willy, owned by Christopher Hudson, a new favourite has appeared to challenge Willys successor. This time he is stabled at Chessington Zoo and receives daily weighing and training from the animal experts there. Trainning consistsof carefully worked out diet - carrot is a favourite - and constant watch on worm weight, as well as practice under stop-watch conditions, with the aid of pace-maker worm mates...Chessingtons entry is named Tom. He was dug up by Bert Senior, the Animal Superintendent, and his wife is acting as an assistant trainer. The big race takes place on Sunday down at Brighton, by which time Christopher Hudsons new entry is hoped to be on form, and another bath of sleek racers should be ready for the off. A training run with Tom and his pace-makers. Stop watch and measured course have been set up down at Chessington. Watching are Andy Bowen, Kate Senior and her husband Bert.
