Dec. 12, 1959 - Oil Drum Adventurer Insists On Sydney To New Zealand Sailing Attempt: Oil drum adventurer Peter Pedaja was dogged by a series of mishaps before his second attempt to drift from Sydney to New Zealand -- on his Can-Tiki an oil drum raft. The wierd raft was washed ashore at La Perouse - when he was bringing it in to weld an extra length of rudder. His first attempt ended when he was bowed back by volunteer Coastal Patrol craft after it was in danger of being bln against the rocks. Pedaja a 28 year old Estonian - insists on making the attempt in spite of warnings from experienced marine of the extreme dangers and difficulties involved in keeping the craft a float when outside the bay- without steering it to New Zealand.
