Jun. 06, 1960 - Blunder Made Jane give Up Her Under-Water Channel Swim Bid: Jane Baldaser's attempt to swim the Channel under water failed yesterday after 4 hours and 20 minutes because someone had blundered. One of her team of 50 helpers had given heer an empty oxygen cylinder. three miles out from the French coast and 20 feet below the calm surface of the sea, the 24-year-old American girl was swimming confidently. Then things went dramatically wrong, and jane, blue in the face, was forced to the surface, gasping for air. She was hauled aboard the ecort boat, but Jane is determined to make another attempt. Photo shows. This is Jane swimming under water a few moments before she had to surface. The outline of the tubula frame which was trialed in the water as a guide can be clearly seen
