Australia Establishes Permanent Station in Antarctic: Australia has established her first permanent scientific research base on the Antarctic continent, where important minerals - possible uranium - are believed to exsist. Named Mawson Station, it will supllement valuable geological meteorological, and other scientific data now emanating regularly from Australia's other two permanent Antarctic Research Stations at Heard and Macquarie Islands. A ten man team has been left at Mawson Station, nearest human habit-ion to the South Pole. The party left Australia for their 12 months sojourne in Antarctica in January (1954) they sailed in the ice-ship Kista Dan, which returned to melbourne at the end of March. Photo shows Phillip G. Law, leader of Australia's Antarctic expeditions, models for the latest in way-down under creatuons. His parka and trouser were specially designed and made in Melbourne, fron a wind-proof English cotton fabric named Ventile; his gloves are made of Polar bear fur; and between him and the ice are crampons of sharpense har steel which strap on to his boots
