Jun. 06, 1969 - Heroes of the British Trans-Artic Expedition arrive back at Portsmouth on Board HMS Endurance: The Royal Navy's ice patrol ship HMS endurance with the British trans-Artic expedition on board arrived back at Portsmouth today. The ship's two helicopter lifted members of the expedition stores and dogs on to H.M.S. Endurance near Spitzbergan last Wednesday at the end of their historic 3, 800 mile journey by land across the North Pole having completed one of the most gruelling feats of human endurance which took the men 478 days.
