Aug. 08, 1972 - Sir Francis Chichester Dies. Francis Chichester, one of the world's greatest air and sea adventurers, died, today at the age of 70 in the Royal Naval Hospital at Plymouth. Lady Chichester and their son Giles were at his bedside when he died. Sir Francis has been ill since he dropped out of the Transatlantic yacht race in July.
