Fake bomb used by hijackers on plane to Munich

Sep. 09, 1970 - Romanian aeroplane hijacked - forced to land at Munich airport. Hungarians forced the pilot to land and asked for political asylum. Several armed Hungarians hijacked a Romanian aeroplane to Munich on the evening of September 14th 1970. The hijackers - three men and one woman who had two little children with her - asked for political asylum in the Bavarian capital. The plane of the type Bac 1-11 had a total of 84 passengers and five crew members on board and was flying from Bucharest to Prague. After an intermediate landing at Budapest the Hungarians occupied the plane and forced the pilot to land at the Munich airport Riem. The leader of the hijackers is 23-year-old television technician Gaza Karaczony. A 25-year-old machinist Janos Mamizisits and 29-year-old joiner Miklos Biro also took part. Biro was with his 24-year-old wife and two children, boys of two five. The Hungarians were disarmed and arrested by the police after the plane landed.
