Fallen horse, Dunkirk, and jockey W Rees, Kempton Park
Dec. 12, 1965 - Dunkirk Killed in the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park: Britain's champion two-mile steeplechaser, Dunkirk, died yesterday when trying to beat Ireland's mighty horse, Arkle, in the king George VI Steeplechase, at Kempton Park. Last night, Dunkirk's owner, Col. W.H. Whitbread, said the horse had broken a blood vessel just before jumping a fence. As Dunkirk fell he broke his neck. Jockey Bill Rees was pinched under Dunkirk for several minutes, and last night was in hospital with a fractured thigh. Picture Shows: Jockey W.
