Famous People's Families

Jan. 01, 1963 - Somerset Maugham takes out action to retrieve £700, 000 from his daughter. 88-year-old British author Somerst Maugham who is to adopt his secretary, 50-year-old Mr Alan Searle as his son has taken out an action to recover some £700, 000 from his daughter Elizabeth wife of the former Minister for Public Works Lord John Hope. Lady Hope has disputed the sale of 9 paintings belong to her. In July of last year three judges refused to allow Mr. Maughan to transfer the proceeds of the sale to New York. In the same month it was announced from Nice that a French court has acknowledged the author's adoption of his secretary. The French lawyer who has been charged by Mr Maugham to revoke certain acts in relation to the author's daughter is ill-disposed towards him, notably in regard to the painting affair.
