Mar. 03, 1954 - The Chimney Sweep Salutes With His Brush His Hat Is Otherwise Occupied: Police Supt. Ernst Werft, of Schleswig Holstein, Germany instructed his men to follow the Old Old custom of saluting good-luck sweep usually saluted in return but not with the traditional hat-raising.He held an inquiry - and discovered the reason to that the sweeps used their top hats as containers for eggs -- bacon - beer etc.give by grateful customers.So the sweeps continue to salute - with their brushes - and not hats.
