Feb. 29 Cathedral thieves rip £20, 000 gems from cross. Thieves broke into Exeter's 12th century cathedral early yesterday. They stole the jewel-studded silver altar cross, and drove off with it. They unscrewed £20, 000 worth of diamonds, then threw the cross aside. A farm labourer picked it up in a field 10 miles away. Photo shows the silver cross from Exeter cathedral, stripped of its diamonds, is carried in for inspection by a constable detective
