Jun. 06, 1967 - First Prison-Dog Patrols Ready For Duty.: The first seven dogs trained for prison service will be introduced to London prison this month. Brixton, Wormwood Serubs and Wandsworth will get two each, and the seventh will be used as a relief. The seven have spent seven weeks at the Metropolitan Police dog training school at Keston, Kent, where in 18 months a total of 200 dogs will be prepared for prison services. Three wardens have been trained to handle each of the first seven dogs. Brig. Mark Maunsell, Inspector General of the prison service, went to Keston yesterday to present the 21 wardens with certificates. Police have been undertaking dog patrols at prisons since October. Eventually wardens will take over from them. The tasks of the patrols is to prevent escapes, detect and detain intruders, help in searching prisons for missing prisoners, and sometimes help in escort duties. Patrols will not normally work outside the walls. Photo shows police Sgt. A. Wilkinson, disguised as an escaping conviet, finding his freedom short lived yesterday at the Metropolitan Police Dog Training Establishment near Keston, Kent, where 21 prison officers have completed training as dog handlers
