Firefighter's lightweight breathing system developed in USA

Feb. 29 Space Programme aids firefighting - fireman's lightweight breathing system. A fireman from the Johnson Space Center, USA demonstrating a lightweight breathing system developed by engineers at the center using materials and technology from the US space programme to design and build tacks and makes that are lighter and more efficient than systems now in use. The air tank is built of an aluminium liner with a glass fibre over wrap, a technique originally developed for solid propellant rocket motor cases. Two fire stations in Houston and two in New York are currently using the system in field demonstration tests. The device was developed under NASA's technology utilisation programme to adopt space developed technology for down to earth uses
