First general election in Malaya - scenes and posters

Apr. 18 Democracy wins in Malaya without a vote: The elections in Malaya on July 27th, when 1.25 million go to the polls for the first time in the country's history, are a two-fold demonstration of British efforts to hold back communism and advance her colonies toward self-government. The communist terrorists against whom Britain has been leading the fight for the past seven years have been virtually defeated militarily and now, with Malaya holding its first General Election, have lost the war of ideas as well. Malays, Chinese, Indians, Pakistanis, Ceylonese, Arabs and others of the many races of Malaya now may choose by free and secret ballot those who shall govern them in a parliamentary manner.
