May 05, 1961 - The liner Canberra receives final fitting out. largest turbo - electric liner ever constructed. The new 45, 000 ton liner Canberra is now receiving her final fitting out in the King George V. Graving Dock - Southampton. The liner was built at Belfast at a cost of 5, 000, 000 - and leaves on her maiden voyage to Australian in June 2nd. she is being fitted out at Southampton because there is no dry do OK at Belfast. she is the largest turbo - electric liner ever constructed - is 820 ft. Long. 102 ft. wide - and has a draft of 32ft. she will carry 600 first class passengers 1, 650 tourist class.
