May 05, 1966 - The First Orienteering Championships. Gordon Pirie Wins: Orienteering, the sport that gives the men an equal chance against the fitter boys, officially came to England yesterday. In driving rain, 160 men and women galloped through thick woodland around Hindhead, Surrey, each striving to become the first-ever Orienteering champion on England. The result: former Olympic runner, Gordon Pirie won the title. Orienteering is a cross between a Boy Scout hike and a car rally. Runners are given a map of the area as they leave at one-minute intervals, then showsn a master map on which are marked a number of check points. They have to cover the ar a, ranging from 10 to 16 miles, stamping a special car at each check point.
