Oct. 10, 1955 - Everest Conqueror To Tackle Antarctic: Sir Edmund Hillary, conqueror of Mt. Everest, will lead an expedition to the Antarctic during the winter of 1957-58. The first contingent of the British Commonwealth Trans -Antarctic Expedition, led by Dr. Vivian Fuchs, will leave Britain November 14, followed early next year by the New Zealand contingent under Sir Edmund Hillary.
