Oct. 10, 1955 - Everest Conqueror To Tackle Antarctic: Sir Edmund Hillary, conqueror of Mt. Everest, will lead an expedition to the Antarctic during the winter of 1957-58. The first contingent of the British Commonwealth Trans -Antarctic Expedition, led by Dr. Vivian Fuchs, will leave Britain November 14, followed early next year by the New Zealand contingent under Sir Edmund Hillary. Photo shows Air Marshal Sir John Slessor looks on as Sir Edmund Hillary dons the reversible nylon furleen jacket he will wear on the expedition. The jacket is called an anorak and eight years of British research have gone into its design
