Nov. 11, 1963 - The Birth of an Island: Nature's creative forces have been working near the Westmann Island. South of Iceland, last week. November 14, pilots flying an airline schedule to Reykjavik discovered steam and lava pouring from ocean, which seemed to be boiling. It was an underwater volcano creating an island of volcanic rocks. The eruption lasted for three days, and on November 17 it reached it's climax. The ocean is about 400ft deep at this point, and the area of the island is about 2 square miles. Photo Shows White smoke drifts away from the new island
