Sep. 04, 1969 - 200th Birthday of Alexander von Humboldt. On September 14, 1769 Alexander Freiherr von Humboldt was born in Berlin. He was one of the greatest nature researchers and founders of physical geography. In 1797 he met the botanist Bonpland in Paris. Between 1799 and 1804, he traveled with Bonpland past the Canary Islands to America and made countless observations on natural science in Venezuela, the Orinoco region, Colombia, Ekuador(ascending the Chimborazo), Mexico, and Cuba and brought those observations back to Europe. In 1829 he undertook an expedition to Central Asia. After that he remained in Berlin, except for diplomatic trips to France, England, and Denmark. He died there on May 6, 1859. One of his main works is the five volume Cosmos, a collection of the natural science knowledge of his time
