May 05, 1997 - Climbing Colossus: They have a problem at Kew Gardens, and that is what will happen when their two-ton cactus outgrows its present abods. The cactus Agave Atrovirens, Var. Laussima, came to Kew 45 years ago as a self-respecting little specimen of a Mexican cactus. Nurtured carefully, it is now 16ft. tall and still growing, and drinks about 50-60 gallons of water at a time. In a natural setting this cactus would reach 40ft. and sprout its first mauve-green flower. A week later it would arrival and dic. So the only hope of those who tend it in the Orangery at Kew Gardens is that the cactus might flower before it reaches the ceiling
