Oct. 07, 1958 - Maurice Herzog was named French Minister of Youth and Sports. Mr. Herzog, who has degrees in science and law, was head of the French expedition in the Himalayas during which he climbed to the top of peak Annapurna. During his ascension, he suffered from frost bite and had to have several fingers and toes amputated. Despite his injuries, he continued climbing mountains and in December of 1957 he directed an expedition in Hoggar with Lionel Terray that reached the summit. He is photographed at his desk
