May 05, 1986 - General Assembly Debates Africa's Economic Crisis: The General Assembly began on 27 May a special session on the critical economic situation in Africa to recommend national and international action for medium- and long-term development of the African continent. In an opening statement the UN Secretary General Javier Perez De Cuellar said that in calling for the session African countries had shown their conviction that the UN system was an effective forum for sensitizing and mobilizing the international community'.
