May 05, 1971 - A3, 000 Solid Gold Chess Set Is Presented To The National Association Of Boys Clubs: A solid gold chess set - believed to be the only one of its kind in this country and worth about 3, 000 was given today to the National Association of Boys Clubs for an annual competition. Singer Frankie Vaughan, well known for his work for Boys clubs and a member of the executive of the NABC, received the gift at the NABC headquarters at 17 Bedford Square, London WC1 from Penny van Cliff, daughter of the donor Mr Isaac van Cliff. Mr Cliff, a one-time antique dealer, had already turned down an offer - he said I was once a member of a boys club in London's Whitechapel Road and I want the chess set to be used as a sort of FA cup for chess players in boys clubs right across Britain to compete for each year'.
