Friedrich Durrenmatt, Swiss writer, 60th birthday
Jan. 01, 1981 - Friedrich Durrenmatt Becomes 60 Years; On January 5th 1981 Friedrich Durrenmatt can celebrate his 60th birthday. The Swiss writer and dramatist was born 1921 in Konolfingen near Bern as son of a Protestant parson. At the universities of Bern and Zurich, from 1941 until 1945 he studied theology, philosophy, literature and history of art. First he worked as a graphic artist and draughtsman, from 1941 he devoted himself to literature and started his career as a dramatist with the tragicomedy Es steht geschhrieben (It is written) - revised form 1967 with the title Die Wiedertaufer (The Anabaptists). In the fifties he wrote two theatre plays - Die Ehe des Herrn Mississipi (The Marriage of Mr Mississippi) and Der Besuch der alten Dame (The visit of the Old lady) - being very successful in the whole world. Later Der Besuch der Alten Dame was also published as a book, and in 1963 filmed with Anthony Quinn and Ingrid Bergman. Some other works: Grieche sucht Griechin, Der Richter und sein Henker (The judge and his executor), Die Physiker, Play Strindberg, Der Sturz (The Fall) - Friedrich Durrenmatt is one of the most important contemporary dramatists in the countries where the German language is spoken. Satire and irony are the weapons with which he fights against a smug citizenship; the comedy is the only theatre of the 20th Century: Only comedy is a getting at us. Our world lead to the like to the atomic bomb
