Funeral of Catholic riot victims in Saigon, Vietnam

Aug. 08, 1972 - Funeral of Catholic riot victims in Saigon, Vietnam: Some 50, 000 Catholics marched behind the caskets of six riot dead in Saigon who were killed in a pro-government demonstration. Two of the victims were women. The Catholics who represent about 10 per cent of the population say they are being repressed by the Buddhist majority. The bizarre funeral, a mixture of Catholic and Oriental ceremonial, wound through the Saigon streets to the Dat Thanh cemetery. Photo shows one of the harrowing scenes at the Dat Thanh cemetery in Saigon when the young widow of a victim attempts to throw herself into an open grave with her head covered in a white veil. Relatives prevent her carrying out her intention
