1968 - Japan Drills For Off Shore Oil. Equipped with the worlds largest oil drilling platform, Japan has entered the off-shore oil prospecting business with enthusiasm knowing that if they strike it rich, they will be able to save vast amounts of money spent in the Persian Gulf, and elsewhere besides having to haul oil around the Cape in mammoth tankers they must build to maintain their already extensive fleet of bulk carriers. The photograph shows the Ocean Prospector which cost, 180, 000, made by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, it can drill to 8, 000 meters depth, and 68 workers can live in comfortable quarters on the platform.
