Gateway, Yasukuni Shrine to war dead, Tokyo, Japan
Oct. 10, 1974 - New gateway to shrine of Japanese war dead; This 25 meter high Torii (Gate) of the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, has replaced the 30 year old wooden gate at the entrance to the shrine dedicated to millions of Japanese combatants killed during the fighting in World War II. Japanese ex servicemen collected 80 million yen (110, 000) to pay for an all weather steel gate which weighs 100 tons, and is the tallest Torii in Japan. The Shrine contains bones, hair and fingernails of the men collected from the battlefields and jungles where they fought, and each year more relics are found by search parties sent out by the government to remote Pacific Islands
