General Jacques Massu with paratroopers in Algiers
May 05, 1958 - France faces revolt in Algeria. General Massu leads paratroopers.: French settlers in Algeria last night revolted against the Paris Government. They were led by fifty year old General Macques Massu, the commander of the Algiers Region. The rebels seized Algiers radio station - and General Massu set up what he terms a Committee of Public Safety - comprising three colonels, seven civilians and himself. He also cabled President Coty to demand the setting up of a Government of Public Safety in France to ensure that Algeria remains French whatever the cost.
