General Norstad to be appointed head of NATO

Apr. 13, 1956 - General Norstad takes over from General Gruenther as Commander-in-Chief of Nato: President Eisenhower announced today that General Alfred E. Gruenther Commander-in-Chief of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation Forces will be replaced at the end of the year by General Lauris Norstad. General Norstad is at present Air Deputy to General Gruenther and chief of the Nato air forces in Europe. Technically General Gruenther is resigning from the U.S. Army owing to ill health.
