General Salan and General Massu, war memorial in Algiers
May 05, 1958 - France Faces Revolt In Algeria: French settlers in Algeria last night revolted against the Paris Government. They were led by 50-year old General Jacques Massu, the Commander of the Algiers Region. The rebels seized Algiers Radio Station - and General Massu set up what he term a Committee of Public Safety - comprising three Colonels, seven civilians and himself. He also cabled President Coty to demand the setting up of a Government of Public Safety in France to ensure that Algeria remains French whatever the cost.
