Jul. 07, 1973 - Afghanistan Monarchy Overthrown According to Kabul radio broadcasts monitored in New Delhi, a former Prime Minister today overthrew the Monarchy in Afghanistan and proclaimed the state a republic. All India Radio reported that the declaration was made by former Prime Minister, General Sardar Mohammed Daud. King Mohammed Zahir Shah is holiday on the Italian island of Ischia and knows nothing of the coup, said an Afghanistan Embassy spokesman in Rome.
