Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Russian conductor

Nov. 11, 1977 - Russian Gennady Rozhdestvensky The BBC Symphony Orchestra's new Chief Conductor. At a press conference, held at Langham Gallery, the BBC announced the appointment to the BBC Symphony Orchestra of Gennady Rozhdestvensky as Chief Conductor. The Orchestra has been without a Chief conductor since the death of Rudolf Kempe in May last year. Gennady was born in Moscow in 1931, he has been chief conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre and USSR Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra. He made his debut with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1969 with his wife, pianist Viktoria Postnikova. Since 1974 he has been principal conductor of the Stockholm Philharmonic.
