George Blake, master spy, escapes from Wormwood Scrubs

Oct. 10, 1966 - George Blake - Master Spy - Escapes from Jail. George Blake, the double spy, who was sentenced to 42 years in 1962, escaped from Wormwood Scrubs prison, West London on Saturday night. A bar of a second floor window in the jail's top security D wing was sawn through and the glass smashed, and a nylon rope ladder was found hanging down the inside of a 20 ft wall backing onto Artillery Lane - between the jail and Hammersmith Hospital. Blake, who worked for the Russians while still a British agent, is 44. Photo shows George Blake - a picture issued by Scotland Yard after his escape from jail
