George Sanders, actor, drag role in film
1969 - Mata Hari with a twist. Who is the blonde Mae West? hardly. Its Oscar winner George Sanders actually, in costume for the most unusual role of his career, that of a transvestite night club performer who doubles as a top flight espionage agent in The Kremlin Letter, a new spy thriller now filming in Rome under John Huston's direction. Sanders, 63, filmed one sequence in full drag at posh Roman nightclub appropriately named The Kinky. The celebrated star, who observes his 40th year as an actor this month, took an active part in the designing of his simple black sheath gown, insisting that it be split from the thigh to the ankle so that he could reveal his legs which he confided are remarkable.
