German hop-queen, Wolnzach (Hallertau district)
Feb. 25 Hot days in the hop gardens have now started for the hop pickers. A well-known picker in the hop gardens of the Hallertau is the 58 year old Susanne Biermann right who has come here to work for 16 years now. She is supervising the other worlers and is allowed to open a sun roof while she is picking the hop. Now and then she even gets a nice cool beer offered from the Hop Queen Margit Breitner left. Two thirds of the German hop are usually picked by machines but still handwork is more appreciated. Keystone picture, 15-9-62
