Germany - Lithuania - Poland
Mar. 18, 1954 - Across half the world out of love. In eight days 24 year old American Fred. Elkins traveled over 14, 000km in order to get married. The airlift pilot met the secretary Helga on the airfield at Berlin-Tempelhof. The two fell in love and decided to get married, but Fred was shifted to Austria. His bride, 19 years old at the time, followed him to Vienna in 1951, but before they could get through the proper channels er was moved again, this time to the Philippines. They spent all his vacation days together, until the beginning of this month when he hitchhiked to Berlin because he didn't have the money to purchase a ticket. His friends from the air force, however, lent him a hand, and so he flew in various military machines over India, Egypt, and Italy to reach Europe, and then Berlin. Now they are married, but on March 23 his vacation is over. Helga will have to wait a little longer, now as Mrs. Elkins, for her exit permit to the United States
