Jul. 30, 1953 - Pictured here is nine year Zbyszke Zajone. The Polish boy was at the middle of a fierce debate on whether or not he should go back to his birth family or stay with an adoptive family. At the end of March 1945, his mother left the seven month old Zbyszke in an air raid shelter in Kassel. After that he was brought to a children's home, where he was found by the Koch family. The Polish woman was repatriated after the war. She returned to Germany however to find her son. She married in Germany and emigrated to the US. Eventually the Polish Red Cross informed her of the whereabouts of her son and she immediately demanded custody of the child. Custody was awarded to the adoptive parents however, especially since it was the wish of the boy, who fought fiercely against being removed from his family
