Jul. 07, 1958 - Medal of Freedom for German Lance-Corporal: On July 23rd 1958 the German Lance Corporal Helmut Fischer was awarded with the Medal of Freedom by US Colonel R.O. Mosher for his bravery. Helmut Fischer gained the highest American medal which can be invested in peace times for bravery, for his action in an air crash. Together with US Liutenant Taylor he started from the air base at Landsberg/Lech in Bavaria in a training plane. During the flight the plane suddenly crashed on the ground and Helmut Fischer was thrown out of the burning plane. In spite of hi burning clothes the Lance Corporal rushed back to try to save the US pilot from the burning plane. At this very moment the oil boilers exploded and Fischer was heavily injured.
