Feb. 25 East German Escapes But Loses Voice An East German woman, aged about 20, today escaped to West Berlin unharmed despite Communist gunfire. She got through barbed wire in a country area on the border of the Spandau district in the British sector. Communist border police fired at her with machine pistols but missed. Keystone man on the spot said she had slept by the wall the night before to give the guards the impression that she was destitute. The shock of the machine gun fire caused her to lose her voice.
