Apr. 05 Montecassino Rebuilt-to be Re-consecrated by the Pope: On February 15th, 1944, the beautiful Abbey of Montecassino, perched on its hilltop above the town of Cassino, and held by the Germans, was completely destroyed by Allied Aircraft, - and much of the town below with it. Today both are rebuilt and the Abbet is to be reconsecrated by the Pope in June. But there are still many reminders of the destruction of that day: there is the tank, still standing by the roadside in Cassino, left there since 1944, there are the giant heaps of rubble, the remains of the old Abbey, at the foot of the new one, there is the Polish cemetery. Photo shows Abbey of Montecassino from an old barbed wired entrenchment
