Sep. 16, 1967 - Let's get on with it! With a few powerful hits of the Bierschlegel or beer mallet Munich mayor Hans-Jochen Vogel, at 12pm, opened the 133 Oktoberfest. In Theresienh?he, the traditional twelve gun salute was also fired. 790 businessmen have built their festival marquees, wurst stands, carousels, show booths, and other showcases on the 25 hectare large area in anticipation of the six million expected visitors in the coming weeks. Pictured: Conducted by the small daughter of Dr. Max Schottenhamel, whose family can look back on one hundred years of Oktoberfest tradition, mayor Dr. Hand-Jochen Vogel divvies out the first beer to important guests
