May 06, 1968 - Alice and Ellen, the gorilla twins, are celebrating their first birthday in this picture against all previous expectations. Much of this is thanks to the nurturing care of their foster moms Mrs. Klose and Mrs. Podolczak. With this, the Frankfurt Zoo has not only recorded the first birth of gorilla twins in a zoo, but it can also report the successful rearing of them! Of course the gorillas quickly outgrew their shoes. They are shown here with Mrs. Podolczak with their birthday cake
