May 05, 1971 - Ulbricht resigned as as first Zk-Secretary Erich Honecker elected as successor: As was reported, Walter Ulbricht, leader of the SED (Socialist Union Germany) and Chairman of the Privy Council of the DDR (Democratic Republic Germany) has resigned as first secreatry of the SEd- Central Comitee. As to a report of ADM, , the news- agency of East-Berlin, Ulbricht asked during a session the ZK (Central Comittee) of the SED to dispense him from his function as first secretary because of age limit ( on June 30th he will be 78 years old). The ZK elected Erich Honcker as successor, Secretary of the ZK and member of the politbure. Ulbricht will hold his function as chairman of the Privy Council.
