Jul. 07, 1976 - 70th Birthday Of Herbert Wehner: On July 11th 1976, the parliamentary leader of the Social Democrats, Herbert Wehner (picture) will become 70 years old. Born in Dresden, Wehner started working as a clerk, but in 1925 turned to journalism. In 1923 he became politically active and joined the union in 1924. 1927 he entered into the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) and became it's party secretary; 1935 he emigrated, finally to the Soviet Union. 1942 Herbert Wehner left the Communist Party and went to Sweden, where he was interned because of conspiration. 1946 he joined the Social Democratic Party and is a member of the Bundestag and of the executive committee since 1949. From 1958 to 1973 he was the vice-chairman of the party, from 1966 to 1969 minister for all-German matters and is now the parliamentary leader of the SPD since October 1969
