Jan. 01, 1978 - Gerd Schmueckle becomes four-stars general and deputy NATO-supreme commander: Deputy of the NATO-Supreme Commander: Becomes on January 1st 1978 lieutenant-general Gerd Schmieckle (Gerd Schmueckle - our picture). Federal Minister of Defense Georg Leber promoted the 60-year-old Swabian with beginning of he new year to a four stars-general and at the same time he nominated him as deputy of the General Commander of the Allied Forces Europe (saucer). Gerd Schmueckle married and father of three children, is since 1974 director of the international Military Headquarters of the NATO in Brussels. In former times he was e.g. Press-man of the former Minister of Defense, Franz Josef stray and had many posts in the NATO and the Federal defense forces
