Jul. 07, 1981 - 30 years ago the Air-lift monument was inaugurated in West Berlin: The air life monument standing in West Berlin since 30 years is reminding of a bad time and many victims which it claimed. On July 10th 1951 it was inaugurated at the place of the air-lift in front and no power of the world is able to defeat it; every year a laying of a wreath takes place at the anniversary and the victims of the operation Air-Lift (77 blockade - aviators perished) are remembered. From June 26th. 1948 until May 12th. 1949 the Soviets had imposed a bloackade on West Berlin to starve out the town. With an air-lift equipped by the Americans and the British about 2, 5 million citizens of Berlin were provided with the most necessary things during this time. 195 998 flights were done in these 14 months. The record stunt of this providing was reached on April 16th. in 1949 when 12 941 tons of eatables, coal and medicaments were flown to Berlin by American Skymasters and British York-planes.
