Jan. 01, 1977 - 100TH BIRTHDAY OF HJALMAR SCHACHT Hundred years ago, the German politician and financial expert HJARMAR SCHACHT (picture) was born in Tingleff/Schleswig. Schacht became the commissionary for the currency of the Reich in 1923 and thus contributed to the stabilization of the German currency; from 1924 to 1929 he was the president of the Reich's Bank and from 1934 to 1937 the Minister of economy as well. The two last years of the war he spent in a concentration camp. At the Nuremburg trials, Schacht was exonerated in 1946 but was imprisoned however by the German authorities until 1948. Hjalmar Schacht died on June 3rd 1970 in Munich
