Mar. 17, 1955 - Fifteen Years Ago He Was Shot Down By Peter Townsend. Fifteen years ago, Karl Missy, a German Air Force petty officer, was shot down by Peter Townsend. The He 111 (Heinckel 111), in which Missy flew as a radio operation and starboard gunner - had just ended a bombing attack somewhere in England, when, on the return journey to Germany, they were attacked by three British Spitfires, led by Peter Townsend, then 24. The German He 111 was forced to land on British soil. Missy was seriously wounded in this fight, and in ten hours underwent seven major operations in an English hospital. A few days later, Townsend paid him a visit, bringing him oranges and cigarettes.
