Jun. 06, 1964 - Normandy - Then And Now. Twenty years ago, on June 6th 1944, the allied forces landed on the Normandy beaches to begin the Second Front which was to eventually bring victory. 4, 000 ships with thousands of smaller vessels, backed by 11, 000 aircraft, carried wave upon wave of troops across the Channel to land them on Normandy beaches at the famous Mulberry floating concrete sectioned harbour that they brought with them. Twenty years later, the slit trenches and barbed wire have all disappeared. All that remains are a few piece of the Mulberry harbour, and once more the beaches belong to the children and the holidaymakers.
